Voice Training Foundations:
Our warmup and training CD

Many singers don't quite know what to do when it comes to warming up and training their voice and the only time they ever do so is during singing lessons.

This CD can provide you with the suitable foundations to build up your singing voice. By exercising and training your voice on your own using the techniques on the CD you will be able to quickly extend your breathing capacity, register, voice character, vocal modes and your understanding of the deeper technicalities of the voice.

Great for beginners and intermediate singers as both a guide to the singing voice and as a regular training routine.

The CD combines musical and non-technical exercises to help develop a solid understanding of the voice and the musicianship behind it. No previous knowledge is required as all exercises are explained in the booklet and additional downloads from the website. Plus, you can get free online help from professional vocal coaches.

The final few tracks are repertoire-based examples. Using verse and chorus sections of existing songs you can practice the different sounds and techniques from the training

In working through the CD and booklet, you will cover:

Breathing exercises
Various sounds, modes and styles used in contemporary singing
Noising and speech mode
Attitude with speech mode
Removing nasal sounds
Self monitoring
Adding power to your voice
Song analysis
Reading music

The exercises have been carefully selected from some of the many that I use in teaching every day and will provide you with a valuable routine that you can use to regularly maintain your voice and to self-train. However to avoid developing bad habits and ensure you are getting the right sound it is essential that you still seek regular professional opinion.

The final few tracks are repertoire-based examples. Using verse and chorus sections of existing songs you can practice the different modes and techniques from the training. This section of the CD can also develop your understanding of song structure, punctuation, breathing and expression by applying your voice to music.

X Carolin Seitz, Singing Teacher

In my lessons you will develop an understanding of how your voice works in order to systematically build your technical skills. The main focus, however, will be on a rather playful discovery of the numerous facets of your voice that will add up to a rich and unique sound. We will pick out songs to work with according to your style and personal preference. If you are a songwriter, your original material is very welcome and lessons can be extended to piano accompaniment, music theory and arrangement, to enhance songwriting skills.

X Ben Woodward, Vocal Coach

Styles: rock, pop, jazz, blues, soul, RnB, dance, musical theatre, electronica, experimental, classical.

I am a practicing singer and a full time voice coach. Whilst I am trained in Estil based singing I am also trained in Alexander Technique and am constantly researching new methods and theories from around the world that I bring into my teaching to apply to the singer I am training. I teach all singers of all levels, ages and styles and direct my lessons depending on what your requirements are.

Training helps develop your confidence, pitch range, breathing, projection, voice character, artistic style and is good for training your spoken voice too. The lessons are entirely tailored to your needs, whether you need more projection, better breathing, more tonality, extra range or you need to diversify your sounds or even work towards a specific style.
We usually tend to work on everything over a long period but sometimes you just need a few pointers to get you on the right track. The foundations are often the same for most styles but if you want to direct yourself to a specific style, we can work on the stylistic conventions to help you get there later on. Whether you want the voice to sound more suitable for blues, rock, jazz, pop, Rnb, theatre, or you just want to experiment with your voice and push out the boundaries. I also train different vocal modes such as twang, belt, speech mode, etc and train at your own speed with your own interests in mind.
The lessons can be down to earth and not too technical while teaching you all the important bits or I can train more of the complicated side that you need to know when singing professionally! My teaching opens more options to you as a singer so when you feel stuck in one sound that you can't break out of I can help you find more ways to sing with one voice.
In most lessons, half the time is based on training to help develop your voice to the next level. The second half is always about singing a song and working through it to find the best way for you to sing it.

I am also a songwriter and multi-instrumentallist so can help you with your own writing or your performance of other instruments or even learn piano or guitar from scratch. If this sounds like it could suit you, I look forward to meeting you soon!

X Ben Woodward, Producer

Styles: rock, pop, jazz, blues, soul, RnB, dance, musical theatre, electronica, experimental, classical.

I have been recording and producing music for over 12 years. Projects have included location recording of jazz bands, orchestras and gospel choirs and a lot of work producing my own music in bands and as solo projects. I am also a songwriter and have written in many styles such as pop, rock, dance, soul, jazz and ballads.
My early work came from experimentation and creating layered soundscapes to get the best sounds. Thesedays I can work from experience of what goes and what doesn't to produce a professional sound quickly and on demand. I have used many analogue and digital systems and also have a lot of the technical background knowledge that you need in order to get that professional touch whilst still being creative and imaginative.

At Artist Studios I produce tracks for bands that can record in the live room, or I can take a songwriter's ideas or demo tape and turn them into a fully blown radio-friendly track. I am also a singer, pianist, guitarist, bassist and percussionist so I can record my performances to your song all on my own. If I can't play it, I can program it or get session artists!

If this sounds good to you, give me a call and we can see what will suit you the best.

X Ben Woodward, Guitar and Piano Tuition

I teach guitar to both build your playing ability and your understanding of how the instrument works. You will pick up some music theory and find your way around the guitar much better. We also work on rhythm, lead and pick out songs to work with.

Piano is the best instrument to learn if you want to develop your understanding of music and how chords are made and how they relate to eachother. My lessons help by simplifying all those keys so you can pick out chords easilly and quickly. We also work on rhythm, melody, harmony and pick out songs to work with.

X Hazel Mills, Singing Teacher

Hazel Mills is a signed recording artist and acclaimed live performer. In 2006, she graduated from The University of Birmingham with a First Class honours degree in Music & Performing Arts already with a number of qualifications in piano, vocal and music theory behind her. She now divides her time between recording and performing (for her own project, frequent session work, and for The Metaphors - the solo project of Roxy Music’s Andy Mackay), and teaching in Bristol.

As a teacher, Hazel will cater for a wide range of vocal styles (Popular, Rock, Classical, Folk, blues/jazz, experimental), focussing on 1) Establishing the techniques required to strengthen and control the voice, 2) A confident and enjoyable approach to performance, and 3) The opportunity for pupils to discover and develop their own style of singing. Music theory will be covered if required.

X Hazel Mills, Piano Teacher

Hazel Mills is a signed recording artist and acclaimed live performer. In 2006, she graduated from The University of Birmingham with a First Class honours degree in Music & Performing Arts already with a number of qualifications in piano, vocal and music theory behind her. She now divides her time between recording and performing (for both her own project and for The Metaphors, the solo project of Roxy Music’s Andy Mackay) and teaching in Bristol.

Hazel teaches a range of levels from beginner to advanced, with an emphasis on:
1) Notes and Chords / Harmony
2) The technique required for controlled, fluid, and seemingly effortless playing,
3) Learning to play from a score (if required), and
4) A confident, personal and enjoyable approach to performance. Her teachings are drawn prodominantly from Classical methods but can be applied to most contemporary genres of music as required by the pupil.
