Warming up vs vocal training.

This is not a warm-up CD, although it can be used as one! The tracks on this CD will develop many areas of your vocal technique when used correctly and regularly. Over time you will familiarise yourself with what works best for you at different times.

The voice tends to react differently to many things. Stress, pressure, food, drink, heat, cold, hayfever, infection, lack of sleep, abuse! One day can be very different to the next and by training the voice you will develop your intuition in knowing what to do to correct a vocal problem!

Build your vocal stamina with a consistent routine.

Boosting your vocal stamina requires working on two areas. Lower body strength and keeping the throat open. Both of these seem like opposites at first but with a consistent and regular routine, you will build up strength and awareness of what is needed, when you need it! These two areas help to avoid constrictions in your throat and keep your effort constant as you sing through your range or through a song.

Exercises to grow your range.

These exercises can extend your range lower and higher. Some have been optimised for male or female ranges. When using them, don't push or over-strain your voice or you will slow down your training. Instead work slowly and look out for constrictions and effort changes as you go through the exercises. Make a note of the ones you have difficulty with and keep working up to there. Then, over time, move up through each scale.

Exercises to boost your projection.

Singing isn't always about singing loud, but if you have trouble with vocal presence, or dynamics then you will probably need to get training your speech-level voice. Some exercises have been specially designed to contrast your dynamics and work on your 'belt' mode.

Exercises to gain speed and tuning.

Sometimes tuning is affected by speed. If this is the case, start slow and build up gradually, looking out for any constrictions or loss of effort in the body. Some exercises can be improvised and modified to try out these techniques with the backing track.

Song-based and improvisation exercises.

Some of the final tracks are song-based exercises that work around a chord structure in various keys, so that you can train your voice in the context of a song's structure. Some tracks then give you the freedom to improvise over the backing track without a guide vocal.

Improvisation can be trained. This is done by practising regularly and always trying out something new!
